Why not take reusable shopping bags?

Posted on 04/10/2008

There are some things we can do to help save our planet which are so simple, but still people can’t be bothered. We’ve been told enough times to know the damage plastic bags do to the environment, but still the vast majority continue to use them like they’re going out of fashion.

Every time I go shopping at my local supermarket I take along my 4 reusable shopping bags. They’re big enough to fit the weekly shop, but it’d be no trouble to take more. They fold down and sit in the bottom of the shopping trolley, ready to be used at the checkout. I don’t know why, but as I trudge around the supermarket I don’t see many people doing the same.

You’d only forget your reusable bags once

If only the supermarkets would act; all of them – and together. If every store got onboard, there’d be no switching to another store in protest. Charging £1 or even £2 per shopping bag would drive the message home. You’d only forget your reusable bags once! They could give us a months notice. In every TV, newspaper or magazine advert they ran there could be short reminder messages. There could be notices in the stores and checkout staff could tell every shopper. We’d have no excuse for not knowing the deadline day.
