What makes a bike such a great, green gift?

Posted on 30/08/2008

Giving a bike as a gift is a great, healthy and green gift. No matter how young or old, if they’re able to ride a bike then it makes a great gift. Not only will bike riding increase fitness and help them to get out of the house more often, if they join a cycling club it’s also a great way to make new friends. And all this without even mentioning the main green credential of the bike; riding as a means of transport, saving on petrol and saving the planet.

Road bikes

For those who live in the city or a large urban area away from the countryside, a road bike is probably best. Mountain bikes might be more hip and trendy at the moment, but their fat, bobbly tires aren’t suited to riding on roads and tarmac. A road bike has thinner, smoother tyres which are better suited to riding in towns and cities.

Mountain bikes

Riding a mountain bike off-road is great fun and for those living in or near open countryside, what a great way to increase fitness and have fun at the same time. You don’t need a mountain to enjoy mountain biking, but living close to hills or mountains allows you to get the most out of mountain biking. With more and more mountain bike centres, tracks and parks springing up everywhere, mountain biking has really taken off in the UK and is growing every year.
